SETI Institute and Breakthrough Listen add agentic AI to telescope work

Why this story?

The story shows AI moving from analysis to direct control of a radio telescope, with live signal processing built into the observation stream.

Agentic AI takes over more of the telescope workflow

Breakthrough Listen and the SETI Institute are using agentic AI at the Allen Telescope Array in Northern California, where the system can steer the instrument, correct incoming data and apply AI models from a single natural-language request. NVIDIA says its Holoscan platform processes the sensor stream and gives the agents live data to act on. The company says the setup is meant to make the search for potential extraterrestrial signals faster and more adaptable.

The work comes as radio telescopes produce large volumes of data that scientists must sort while observations are still underway. NVIDIA said the Allen Telescope Array uses DAQIRI, a Holoscan library, to move terabits per second of sensor data directly into GPU memory so observations are processed in flight rather than stored on hard drives. It also said CyberEther, a signal-processing framework developed at the SETI Institute, uses CUDA-X libraries for the math.

Andrew Siemion, who leads Breakthrough Listen as principal investigator, said the new system is less about fear than translation. He said the agents may find signals that have more in common with the AI systems built to detect them than with the humans who built those systems.
