Researchers study routing across models, tools and policies in general-purpose AI systems

Why this paper?

The paper stands out because it tests routing across language, image, video, speech, coding, workplace agents and robotics in one framework, instead of a single task area.

Researchers have proposed a framework called Route Anything for studying how general-purpose AI systems can route tasks to the right model, tool or policy instead of relying on a single system for everything. The paper says the work is meant to examine routing under quality-cost trade-offs across multiple modalities and tasks, rather than to claim one model can master them all.

To test that idea, the researchers built an omni-modal trajectory matrix covering 25 benchmarks in language understanding, image, video and speech generation, coding and workplace agents, and robotic manipulation. The dataset includes 374,401 scored runs from 452 candidate configurations, which the authors say let them compare routers under the same inputs across different capabilities.

In the paper, the researchers report that per-input oracle routing beat the best fixed candidate by 5.4 points. Learned routers did not match the oracle, but they still outperformed the best fixed candidate by 0.3 points across 16 benchmarks, by 2.1 points on video generation and by 1.1 points on robot manipulation, while using 24% less policy time.

The authors also report that routing increased efficiency by 8.82 times on average compared with the reference model, with larger gains on coding tasks and text question answering. They frame the findings as evidence that capability orchestration can improve both performance and cost, but the results are drawn from the benchmarks and candidate pools included in the study.
