METR says Anthropic redacted much of evidence in October AI R&D assessment
Why this story?
METR’s assessment is notable because it says most of the evidence it found most informative was redacted, limiting what it could publicly explain.

METR said Anthropic redacted a majority of the evidence the group found most informative in an October 2026 assessment of AI R&D acceleration, limiting how much of the report’s reasoning could be described publicly. METR said it was still able to share its highest-level conclusions about risk, and that the redactions were described by Anthropic as intended to remove confidential information that could accelerate other AI developers.
The assessment was published by METR on Nov. 5, 2026. In the report, METR said the redactions were important to some of its conclusions and that it could only discuss part of the evidence in detail.
METR also said the project was reviewed under its conflict-of-interest policy. One participating team member had been in discussions with Anthropic about a possible role, received an offer and declined it, and had equity in a competitor as a former employee; METR said that person’s work was checked by an unconflicted team member.
